Does this idea really exist?
I conducted a survey in which individuals were first asked to identify themselves as either masculine, feminine or androgynous. (However I received no responders that identified as androgynous). They were then asked a few questions to identify what food and drink preference they had. I also asked two yes or no questions that were left open to provide a response. The questions were:
Based on the results of the survey I conducted it seems as though the results parallel the constructed norms of society. Not a single item was chosen equally by masculine individuals or feminine individuals. This led me to believe that this "separation" of food by gender does in fact exists.
Some of the open responses I received to question two reaffirms this idea. One individual, who identified as feminine, said, "Depends on the situation and the people I'm surrounding myself with. Sometimes when I go against gendered norms too much certain people will call me out." I found this response particularly interesting because I feel as though a lot of people would agree. I think it is the pressures of the people around us that we feel we must act in a particular way. We are forced to conform to the norm because everywhere around us is; if we don't we present ourselves as an outcast.
- Would you say you consider calorie intake when deciding what to order at a restaurant?
- Would you say that your choice of food or drink limits or contributes to you gender expression?
